Adrian Bell's diaristic account of life in a Suffolk village at the beginning of the Second World War is introduced by his eldest daughter Anthea Bell, the acclaimed translator of W.G. Sebald, another great reimaginer of the Suffolk landscape. The war itself is rather a distant presence – 'Occasionally a bomber would come down in flames near us', Adrian Bell wrote in 1964, 'but for the most part, the war was only a droning overhead. Mud and the weather were, as they had always been, the main adversaries in this remote parish.' This new edition of Apple Acre contains the line drawings by Richard Kennedy specially commissioned for the 1964 edition, and the cover is a detail of a painting by Keith Vaughan.
