Waltz with Bashir

Waltz with Bashir

Ari Folman

As a 19-year-old conscript in the IDF Ari Folman took part in the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and witnessed the aftermath of the massacres at the Sabra and Chatila refugee camps. In 2006 he met up with an old army colleague, who described to him a recurrent nightmare. Realising that the nightmare was connected to their time in Lebanon, Folman was disturbed to discover that he had suppressed all memories of that period of his life. This animated documentary recounts his attempts to recover those memories, through therapy and interviews with other people who were there. ‘Waltz With Bashir is an extraordinary, harrowing, provocative picture,’ wrote Xan Brooks in the Guardian after watching the film at Cannes on its release in 2008. ‘We staggered out of the screening in a daze.’
