Jules et Jim

Jules et Jim

Francois Truffaut

For those who can’t travel to the Truffaut season at the BFI this spring, pick up a copy of Jules et Jim, a French New Wave classic. Jules et Jim is the story of two men who meet in Paris. They share an interest in art and the Parisian Bohemian lifestyle, and soon meet the charming but unpredictable Catherine. Their relationships with Catherine make up the rest of the film, which features many of the stylistic devices that came to distinguish New Wave cinema, including newsreel footage, freeze frames and voiceover narration. Catherine says ‘one is never completely in love for more than a moment’ and this film strings together a series of such moments.
