William Henry Hudson was born in Argentina in 1841, the son of Anglo-American settlers, and his early years were spent roaming the pampas in search of birds and other wildlife; an idyllic, almost feral childhood recalled in Far Away and Long Ago, the best known of his many books. Conrad wrote of Hudson: ‘One cannot tell how this fellow gets his effects; he writes as the grass grows. It is as if some very fine and gentle spirit were whispering to him the sentences he puts down on the paper.’
