Guide to the Getty Villa

Guide to the Getty Villa

Kenneth Lapatin et al.

Nicholas Penny writes:

Visitors [at the Getty Villa] don't seem to be in any doubt that it is full of masterpieces of Greek and Roman sculpture – after all, the governments of the countries in which (or off the shores of which) they were found are now insisting that many of them be returned. They must be right to ask but it would be a shame to see so much devoted effort to present ancient art in an intelligible way undone . . . It is the single most important institution for promoting the appreciation and understanding of such art.
