Cees Nooteboom is one of the Netherlands’ most distinguished living authors, an acclaimed stylist whose works include novels, short stories, travel writing, poetry, essays and reportage. In the English-speaking world, Nooteboom is perhaps best known for his novel The Following Story, an elegant fable about love, travel, philosophy, science and selfhood, and Roads to Santiago, an intensely personal pilgrimage through the landscape, history and culture of Spain. Nooteboom discussed his life, work and travels with the Booker Prize-winning novelist and critic A.S. Byatt, a great admirer of his work.
