Published in 2009, both Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant and Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall feature a vast array of characters, and explore the intersection of individual psychology and wider politics. The authors discussed their work, and historical fiction in particular, with Joanna Bourke, before taking questions from the audience.

Hilary Mantel is the author of 12 books, including the memoir Giving Up The Ghost, and novels A Place of Greater Safety, Beyond Black, which was shortlisted for the 2006 Orange Prize, and most recently, Wolf Hall, shortlisted for the 2009 Man Booker Prize.
Sarah Dunant has written 11 novels (four of which have been shortlisted for awards) and three screenplays, and has edited two books of essays. She was a founding patron of the Orange Prize for women’s fiction, and writes and reviews for many British newspapers including The Times, The Observer and the Guardian. She sits on the editorial board of the Royal Academy’s art magazine, and is co-curating a major exhibition on women in the Renaissance, to open at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence in 2011.
